Who are we? Silent fighters, that's who. I love the flood of books by nonverbal autistic people. It is time to be advocating for ourselves. Why forever must the theories of scholars be listened to over the people with autism themselves?
Is it possible Ivar Lovaas or Bruno Bettelheim knows autism better than I do?

I am an autistic guy with a message. I spent the first half of my life completely trapped in silence. The second - on becoming a free soul. I had to fight to get an education. Now I am a regular education student. I communicate by typing on an iPad or a letter board. My book, "Ido in Autismland" is now available on Amazon. It is an autism diary, telling the story of my symptoms, education, and journey into communication. I hope to help other autistic people find a way out of their silence too.

I even show visuals of you, Carly and Sue Rubins to emphasize literacy and education in my technology (iPad) presentations. I read the books, blogs, and facebook pages so that I might understand better how to help our son and to let him know that he is not alone. He is non-verbal and still getting the hang of typing to communicate. I look forward to when he is able to advocate for himself too. The world is finally learning how incredibly intelligent non-verbal people are and how to become more accepting of sensory overload situations. Thanks again! Blessings
ReplyDeleteThe stories of all you silent fighters are SO incredibly important!! I am so glad that I've found them in the months since I've started working with a nonverbal autistic boy. It seems that nobody around him believes that he is intelligent. His teacher comments on the great progress he's made in being able to match colors. I don't know how to convince any of the people in his life that there is more to him without being able to show them direct proof. I've already bought Taoki's book for his family, though I don't think any of them read it. I plan on sending a link to this blog, but I don't think that will quite do the trick either. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could get him started down the road to communicating? How did you learn to type?!?!!?
